Amigurumi Penguin

By chance, someone on Ravelry recommended a crochet pattern to me: Amigurumi Penguin by Lion Brand Yarn. What I know about crochet, at this point in time, is still pretty limited. (I'm trying to up my skill level as part of my New Year's resolutions!) However, it's basically all double crochet (American: single crochet) with some simple increases and decreases.

I love this pattern because you end up with something cute, tactile and a nice sense of accomplishment - pretty quickly too, so I'm grateful for the recommendation as my patience is currently still in short supply. :p It has also brought to my attention the differences between British and American crochet notations, which, as a relative crochet novice, I was previously unaware of. To be honest, I was some way into the pattern before my brain elbowed me and said "you do realise it says SC, not the DC you think you're seeing?"

British American
double crochet (dc) single crochet (sc)
treble (tr) double crochet (dc)
half treble (htr) half double crochet (hdc)
double treble (dtr) triple crochet (trc)

I know what a treble is and I'm vaguely aware of a half treble but this is just starting to spiral! Oh well, I'm sure I'll pick up the lingo soon... :)

  1. That's a lovely little pattern. I'm learning to crochet as well, so I might add it to my list of projects. Best wishes.
